چکیده

About 40 years ago, in a gesture of civic enlightenment, the United States Congress passed legislation that converted the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA; in existence since 1915) to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The Space Act, no doubt in partial response to the launching of the first near-Earth satellite, Sputnik, by the Soviet Union, established NASA in 1958. This legislation is arguably the most well-written and enlightened government document to be created since the 18th century Jeffersonian Declaration of Independence. Many of the stated goals of the 1958 Space Act were meant to generate new knowledge about the universe at large, but the statement that has most directly concerned molecular evolution is the following (1, p. 4):

Tangled trees: the challenge of inferring species trees from coalescent and noncoalescent genes.

Phylogenies based on different genes can produce conflicting phylogenies; methods that resolve such ambiguities are becoming more popular, and offer a number of advantages for phylogenetic analysis. We review so-called species tree methods and the biological forces that can undermine them by violating important aspects of the underlying models. Such forces include horizontal gene transfer, gene...

Seeing the forest for the trees: the limitations of phylogenies in comparative biology. (American Society of Naturalists Address).

The past 30 years have seen a revolution in comparative biology. Before that time, systematics was not at the forefront of the biological sciences, and few scientists considered phylogenetic relationships when investigating evolutionary questions. By contrast, systematic biology is now one of the most vigorous disciplines in biology, and the use of phylogenies not only is requisite in macroevol...

Elastic Behavior of Functionally Graded Two Tangled Circles Chamber

This paper presents the numerical elastic solution for a real problem, functionally graded chamber of hydraulic gear pumps under internal pressure. Because of the similarity and complexity for the considering geometry, a bipolar cylindrical coordinate system is used to extract the governing equations. The material properties are considered to vary along the two tangled circles with a power-law ...

The Molecular Identification of four Species of Gastropoda on Rocky Shores of the Persian Gulf

In this study molecular identification of four species of Gastropoda have been studied based on mitochondrial genes, COI and 16S rRNA in the present work for the first time in the northern rocky coastal zones of Persian Gulf during years 2013 and 2014. Planaxis sulcatus، Cerithidea cingulata، Siphonaria savignyi and Onchidium peronii Identified. After morphological identification, DNA extractio...

Molecular Evolution and Phylogenetics

We can place more than just organisms into trees: individual genes from the genomes of various organisms can also be placed into trees, and from these gene phylogenies, we can often infer the species phylogenies. Often, this is done with the geological record in mind: not all branches of the tree of life terminate in the present – there are many that end in the various mass extinctions that hav...
